Who is Gary Pappin?

I am a retired farmer living in the heartland of Farrer.  I was born in Balranald and raised on a sheep station at the beginning of 'the outback'.  I spent my youth in the shearing sheds and fruit-picking around the Riverina. In my 20s I was employed for the public service in rangelands management and later National Parks and heritage conservation.  After I married I took a career break to work as a truck driver and in the mining industry. I returned to the public service in my late 40s working in water infrastructure.  I recently retired to an irrigation property in Mellool. In 2024 I was elected Councillor for the Greater Wakool ward of the Murray River Council.

I have exceptional communication and interpersonal skill having led workshops and presented at an international level. I also have a strong foundation in Parliamentary lobbying.  I have represented Australia to the United Nations as our Indigenous representative on World Heritage.  I co-founded and chaired the World Heritage Indigenous Peoples Council of Experts.

I have an ability to unite the constituents of Farrer. My dispute resolution skills are excellent. I was instrumental in the adoption of the Joint Management Agreement for Mungo National Park and the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area. This agreement brought the local landowners, Traditional Owner groups, Government and the scientific community together to work for a better future.  It also heralded a substantial increase in tourism to the western half of Farrer.

I have an understanding of agricultural water needs.  As an irrigator myself, but also as an advocate for change.  I have been on Murray Darling Basin Commission committees, I co-founded and chaired the Murray Lower Darling River Indigenous Nations (MLDRIN) and worked on the Living Murray documents.

I have strong ethics and sense of community service.  I am a member of the Human Ethics Committee of Charles Sturt University in Albury and the Barham Country University Centre Working Group. I am a former Director of the Wakool Indigenous Corporation and I have completed the NSW Police IPROWD program.

My wife and I have been married for 15 years and we have six children together. I come from a very large local family.

As a local I have a thorough understanding of the issues in Farrer.  I am the perfect candidate for Farrer because I am open and honest with local knowledge and a keen sense of justice.
